How to convert a decimal to a fraction

  • 1. First, make a fraction with the decimal as the numerator and the denominator as 1.
  • 2. To convert the decimal in the numerator to an integer, multiply the numerator and denominator by a power of 10 equal to the number of decimal places in the numerator.
    (If there are X digits after the decimal point, multiply by 102.)
  • 3. Simplify fractions by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
  • 4. To simplify a fraction, convert it to a mixed number.

Calculation example

Example: Convert 3.125 to a fraction

Convert the decimal into a fraction with a denominator of 1.

3.125 = 3.1251

To make the numerator a decimal, multiply the numerator and denominator by 1000.

3.125 × 10001 × 1000 = 31251000

If it is possible to simplify, simplify by dividing the numerator and denominator by 125 (the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator).

3125 ÷ 1251000 ÷ 125 = 258

Convert the improper fraction into a mixed number.

258 = 318

Therefore, converting 3.125 to Fraction results in 318.
