Calculation of infant obesity (Kaup index)

What is the Kaup Index?

For infants from 3 months old to 5 years old, the degree of obesity is expressed by the Kaup index.

Calculate the Kaup index from height and weight using the same formula as BMI.

If it is within the range of the index according to the age of the infant, it will be a normal weight.

If it is less than this standard, it will be "thin", and if it exceeds it, it will be "overweight".

Kaup index formula

The Kaup index is calculated using the same formula as BMI.

Kaup index = Body weight(kg) ÷ (Height(m))2

Alternatively, if you want to calculate in grams and centimeters, you can do the same with the formula below.

Kaup index = Body weight(g) ÷ (Height(cm))2 x 10

Criteria for the Kaup Index

The age of the Kaup index and the standard range are as follows.

Typical Range of Kaup Index

Age Range
Infant (up to 1 year old) 16 - 18
1 year old to less than 1 year and 6 months old 15.5 - 17.5
1 year and 6 months to under 3 years old 15 - 17
3 to 5 years old 14.5 - 16.5
